Located at the transition point between San Francisco's commercial and industrial waterfronts, the Boathouse at Pier 70 brings boating enthusiasts together to live at the water's edge.

The structures open courtyard typology forms a semi-private, protected dock for groups of residents to launch multiple scales of watercraft. Residences at the Boathouse are comprised of micro unit apartments in the Japanese 1SK typology; known as an “Apato” or “アパート”, with one main room (1), walk-in storage (S), galley kitchen (K), and compact unit bathroom. These small units enable a greater amount of on site boat storage in the form of docks, racks, and workshops on the ground floor then shared stepped patios at the end of each level’s open corridor.

The culture and operations of the facility stem from the boathouse pub on the northern pier, and harbor masters office and chandlery located on the southern pier.
